Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. pictures will unleash the next monster movie on May 31st, 2019. Toho will handle the distribution in Godzilla’s home territory of Japan.
The story of the film continues the ongoing underlying narrative of Monarch. We saw the secret agency in the initial Godzilla, as well as an older iteration of the shadowy organization in Kong: Skull Island. But really, Monarch is just a figurehead to give us a narrative reason to watch these monsters fight. And fight they will. Accord to the official synopsis from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros., Godzilla King of the Monsters will incorporate some of Godzilla’s most notorious foes:
“The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species – thought to be mere myths – rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.”
Michael Dougherty co-wrote and will direct the film. Additional writers were Zach Shields and Max Borenstein. The movie looks to have moved on from the leads of the 2014 cast. Instead, we focus on Vera Farmiga’s Dr. Emma Russell, Ken Watanabe returning as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, Sally Hawkins’ reprisal of Dr. Vivienne Graham, and Kyle Chandler in the role of Mark Russell.
Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown has been cast as Russell’s daughter, Madison. And Charles Dance and O’Shea Jackson Jr. have credits in the movie as well.
Godzilla King of the Monsters will be the 3rd iteration in the Legendary’s “MonsterVerse.” The culmination of which, Godzilla vs. Kong is slated for May 22nd, 2020. Filming is expected to begin later this year.
