HBO Watchmen Casting, Story Details

Damon Lindelof and HBO are teaming up once again following their amazing work on The Leftovers. The duo announced previously that Lindelof’s take on Watchmen would their next collaboration. And now we have news regarding the shows direction as well as some fantastic additions to its cast.Watchmen

Earlier this week Lindelof posted a lengthy letter to fans of Watchmen on his Instagram account. He explained that his take on the property won’t be a retread of what we’ve seen before. Saying, “We have no desire to ‘adapt’ the twelve issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago. Those issues are sacred ground and will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted.”

Lindelof continues by saying it will instead be a continuation of sorts, and lays out the series’ lore:

“They will however be remixed, because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we’d be fools not to sample them. Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along it did not erase what came before it. Creation. The Garden of Eden. Abraham and Isaac. The Flood. It all happened. And so it will be with ‘Watchmen.’ The Comedian died. Dan and Laurie fell in love. Ozymandias saved the world and Dr. Manhattan left it just after blowing Rorschach to pieces in the bitter cold of Antarctica.”

Damon continued that “this new story must be original.” He said that the comic was specific to “the Eighties of Reagan and Thatcher and Gorbachev.” And that HBO’s Watchmen needed to speak to its current times of “Trump and May and Putin and the horse that he rides around on, shirtless.”

Lindelof then concludes by saying “Some of the characters will be unknown. New faces. New masks to cover them. We also intend to revisit the past century of Costumed Adventuring through a surprising yet familiar set of eyes…and it is here we will be taking our greatest risks.”

Today we know who some of those new faces will be. Regina King, teaming up with Lindelof again following The Leftovers, will play the series’ lead. She’ll be joined by Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, and Andrew Howard. Neither HBO nor Lindelof are giving hints as to who the actors will be portraying.

There’s no timetable for when the show will premiere yet. But with Lindelof’s clear love for the source material, as well as the network that’s bringing it, we have high hopes for this one.
