Orcs, magic, and space adventures with hundreds of our closest friends.

As summer comes to a close, the games just keep coming. August was a surprisingly great month filled with nine great new games. Now, we’re heading into September, and next month has even more video games on the way.

September typically gets the big fall season off to a good start every year, and 2017 is no exception, with some great Switch ports, a ton of consistently great sports franchises, and one game that’s over twenty years in the making. Yes, you read that correct.

It’s time to break out the calculator and figure your budget out for the month, because here are the 13 hottest new games coming in September that are all worth checking out:

Knack II

new games september

Release Date: September 5th
Systems: PlayStation 4
Developer: Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Price: $39.99 MSRP

By most accounts, Knack II appears to be faring much better amongst previewers than its predecessor did with reviewers. Which is good, seeing how the original Knack was knocked for its mediocre gameplay and story. Two pretty important factors for most video games.

Sony’s President Shuhei Yoshida said that he didn’t expect reviewers to understand Knack – it wasn’t meant for them. It was meant to showcase that the PlayStation 4 wasn’t just for hardcore gamers. And thus, he and SIE Japan are doubling down on that message.

Knack II is said to incorporate fixes for most of the ailings of the original. Not to mention that BAFTA winning and God of War scribe Marianne Krawczyk was brought in to pen the script. If everything comes together, it could legitimately turn the Knack series into a continual Sony franchise.

While Knack II isn’t going to be an immediate buy for many, we have a feeling it’s going to be a slow burner; once those positives reviews start hitting, people are going to want to check it out.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2018

hottest new games

Release Date: September 12th
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Developer: PES Productions
Publisher: Konami
Price: $39.99 MSRP

Often overshadowed by the FIFA series, Pro Evolution Soccer has annually released its own fantastic version of soccer/football sim. PES 2015 had a 83 on Metacritic. PES 2016 an 86. And last year’s Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 earned a Metascore of 87. So why is this the less known series again?

Konami’s next iteration of the franchise is sure to continue the same quality on the pitch as those that have recently come before it. This year’s version touts more realistic game speed, strategic dribbling, and more uses of the body in regards to ball control. On top of that, there’s enhanced visuals, online co-op modes, and a presentation overhaul. This could be the best PES yet. Heads up, FIFA.

Destiny 2

destiny 2

Release Date: September 6, 2017
Platform: PC, Xbox One, PS4
Developer: Bungie, High Moon
Publisher: Activision
Price: $59.99 MSRP

Despite our own personal opinions regarding Destiny 2 looking too much like its predecessor, let’s remember that it’s predecessor was pretty good, anyway. It’s going to be one of the hottest new games of September, sales-wise, at least, and it’ll probably review well also. This baby will sell, and it’s likely that you and your friends are going to want to jump in come September 6th.

There’s not much else to say about it, but to many, this is a much anticipated sequel. Here’s to hoping it’s a much better experience than the original with less time spent loading in space and more time getting that sweet, sweet loot. It’s one of the most anticipated games of 2017.

When Nintendo announced Metroid Prime 4 at their E3 Nintendo Direct, fans went bonkers. Little did we know the Big N had another trick up their sleeve. NHL 18

nhl 18

Release Date: September 15th
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Developer: EA Canada

Perhaps EA’s most consistently great sports franchise, NHL 2018 would have to have undergone something terrible behind the scenes to not at least be considered “good.” And there’s no reason to suspect anything is amiss.

The new version features a side mode consisting of an awesome sounding 3-on-3 arcade style of hockey. And players will also have the ability to create their own NHL franchise by taking part in an Expansion Draft. You’ll control the now 32nd team to the league and then participate fill our roster how you choose. Sounds like another year of good times on the ice.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Story Trailer

Release Date: September 19th
Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Price: $59.99 MSRP

Fans are unsure how to react to the next outing in the Marvel v. Capcom series yet. The roster seems to be fading out Marvel characters that aren’t MCU based, and bringing more in to reinforce that brand. There literally isn’t anyone confirmed yet on the Marvel side of things that hasn’t appeared in a MCU based movie. And the new big bad this go around is a combination of Marvel’s Ultron and Capcom’s Sigma who are focused on the Infinity Stones. Thus the game’s title.

As far as gameplay goes, the core tag team fighting style remains intact. However, the new “free-form” tag systems adds even more versatility to the system. Tags can be essentially be done at any point now, whether mid-air or during chained attacks. You can also Counter-Switch, enabling you to tag out while your partner is in the midst of being pummeled. And, of course, the Infinity Stones will have their own ways of mixing up each battlefield as well.

NBA 2K18

new games coming

Release Date: September 19th
Platforms:  PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
Developer: Visual Concepts
Publisher: 2K Sports

Much like the NHL series being a sure thing for EA every year, so too is the NBA 2K series for 2K Sports. MyGM and MyLeague return for what’s sure to be another solid yearly iteration. And this year actually features the NBA’s G League – formerly known as the D League – which is essentially the NBA minor league.

Perhaps most revelatory is the existence of a Nintendo Switch version of NBA 2K18. No one really knows at this point if that version can stand with its PlayStation 4 and Xbox One brethren. But it’s important for future Switch releases that it does.

Pokkén Tournament Dx

Pokken tournament

Release Date: September 22nd
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Developer: Bandai Namco
Publisher: The Pokémon Company
Price: $59.99 MSRP

Much like Rayman Legends, Pokkén Tournament is a port of the previously released version on the Wii U. But due to the Wii U floundering at the time, it only made sense for The Pokémon Company to bring the fighter over to Switch.

The Switch version brings over characters not seen on the Wii U though, including: Croagunk, Empoleon, Darkrai, Decidueye and Scizor. Putting the complete roster at this point to 21 different Pokémon. There are also 32 non-playable support Pokémon in the game, with Litten and Popplio only available on the Switch as well.

Project Cars 2 is flying under the radar. But those that have played the original racing sim swear by it. So much so that the sequel was made possible due to donations from the community. The support worked, and Project Cars 2 was officially announced back in February.

The sequel boasts a new time and weather system. Each of which are manipulated by the now implemented changing of seasons. And LiveTrack 3.0 brings “realistic track conditions throughout race weekend.” Online rankings, online championships and better matchmaking have been added. And the general online feel has been focus more towards an eSport feeling.

Cuphead Trailer and Release Date

Release Date: September 29th
Platforms: Xbox One, PC
Developer: Studio MDHR
Publisher: Studio MDHR
Price: $19.99 MSRP

Finally! Am I right? The game that seems like it’s been at shows for years, Cuphead is finally poised to make its proper debut.

The game was originally conceived as a boss battle title of sorts. Studio MDHR intended to have Cuphead surpass the Guinness World Records for number of boss battles in a run and gun game. The current record is 25 – Cuphead will host over 30.

The developers have been working on implementing new platforming aspects to the game over the last year or so. And previews of said builds have been hit or miss. Let’s hope all kinks in Mugman’s jumping skills have been ironed out, and that Cuphead turns out to be everything we hoped it would be.

However, if you did play through FIFA 17‘s story, the game will adapt to your decisions and incorporate them.

Promising that “top players feel and move exactly like they do on the real pitch.”

Star Fox 2

new games coming September

Release Date: September 29th
Platform: Super NES Classic
Developer: Nintendo & Argonaut Games
Publisher: Nintendo

The game that’s over twenty years in the making. Star Fox 2 was essentially complete when Nintendo decided to cancel the project back in 1995. The Nintendo 64 was on the verge of debuting in Japan, and Nintendo wanted to promote the then powerful 3D console and not muddy the waters with a late stage SNES game.

Enter the Super NES Classic Edition. In a brilliant move of marketing, Nintendo decided to finish up the derelict Star Fox 2 and place it amongst the nostalgic SNES library of iconic titles. It certainly generated a ton of buzz for the mini console (not that it needed it), and rail shooter finally gets to see the light of day. That is, if you can find a Super NES Classic of course…
