Slightly Mad Studios may be just that. The team behind the successful Project Cars series has turned their attention away from software and are currently focusing on hardware. CEO and founder of Slightly Mad Studios, Ian Bell, announced via Twitter that his team has “the most powerful console” ever built heading our way. They’re call it – the Mad Box.
What is the Mad Box? It's the most powerful console ever built… It's literally 'Mad'… You want 4k, you want VR at 60FPS? You want a full engine for free to develop your games on it? You have it.

After Bell’s tease, Variety followed up with the CEO and was able to get a few more significant tidbits of information on the mysterious Mad Box. Bell told the site that Slightly Mad is expecting to have the Mad Box shipped “around three years time” and that the system “will be a console as is the Xbox or PlayStation”.
Following the introduction of Microsoft’s Xbox in 2001, the game console landscape hasn’t seen much change in way of new competition. Sega bowed out that same generation following the failure of the Dreamcast. And following that, it’s been Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony all vying to be top dog.
Apparently Slightly Mad is looking to disrupt that current dynamic, and it sounds as though they’ll be introducing some serious tech in an effort to do so. Bell describes the Mad Box as having specs equivalent to a “very fast PC 2 years from now”. He also promised that the Mad Box “will support most major VR headsets and those upcoming”.
It also sounds like the ball is already rolling for Bell and his team. He confirmed that Slightly Mad is “in early talks with manufacturers of components so we can’t say much more right now other than we have the designs specced out in detail.”
Whether this potential Mad Box turns out to be anything more than a pipe dream is anyone’s guess at this point. But if Slightly Mad can deliver a new console to market that incorporates all the modern bells and whistles at an affordable price, it will certainly turn some heads.
