After picking up the rights in 2014, progress on the Minecraft movie has been arduous. The project has seen several directors come and go, and numerous release dates fall by the wayside. Now it appears the film may be headed in the right direction, as the Minecraft movie release date has now been set – for March 2022.

Yes, that’s three years away at this point. Or as the staff at Minecraft.net points out “only 1053 days. Or about 34 months, or 150 weeks, or a million and a half minutes. Not that we’re counting, of course.” They note that after five years of already trying to get this movie off the ground, they’ve found that “making a live-action, full-length feature film is really complicated!”

The site confirms their continued partnership with Warner Bros., “a company that’s been around the block. So to speak.” They also note that Peter Sollett is still attached to write and direct. Sollett’s biggest credit to date is the Michael Cera and Kat Dennings romantic comedy-drama, Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist.

According to Minecraft.net staff, the plot of the Minecraft movie is based around “the story of a teenage girl and her unlikely group of adventurers. After the malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, they must save their beautiful, blocky Overworld.”

That, of course, doesn’t give us much. But with the Minecraft movie release date not slated for another three years, that should give Sollett plenty of time to flesh things out. Today’s blog does comedically note that “the movie has to be different from the game (otherwise, you’d be in for an infinite movie in very low resolution)”.

One thing is for sure, Warner Bros. and the Minecraft team certainly won’t be hurting for an audience that cares about the property. Minecraft is the second best-selling video game of all time behind Tetris with over 154 million copies sold across all platforms.
