Johansson portrays Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetically-enhanced woman. She acts as the head of the counter-terrorist group Public Security Section 9. The story takes place in a dystopian 21st century version of Japan. In the upcoming film, the character will be known simply as “the Major.”
Since casting was first announced, this adaptation from Paramount and DreamWorks has been met with controversy from fans. Since the original manga and the anime adaptation center around this Japanese character, many have been disappointed by Johansson’s casting.
On the other hand, Johansson has really proved herself with science fiction and action. Her recent roles in Under the Skin, Her, Lucy, and the Marvel movies show that she can handle the sci-fi elements.
This first look gets a lot of things right. The colors really reflect the original look of the anime. Everything has that blue and green look to it without feeling unnatural.
We certainly hope that Ghost in the Shell gets the right attention. The movie is expected to release March 31, 2017. If you haven’t seen any of the previous adaptations, the first anime movie is a great place to start. It can be found here.
