**Update 2/19/17: Matt Reeves is no longer going to direct The Batman, as talks with DC fell through. Should The Batman be canceled?
Original (Posted 2/11/17 at 9:00AM):
Recently, we learned that Ben Affleck had stepped down as the director of The Batman as he noted the impossibility of directing a great Batman film while playing the role of Batman at the same time. After he decided to choose to dawn the cowl instead of direct someone else in it, the director chair became empty, and the hunt for the next great Batman director went underway. Now, it looks like that hunt is over, as Matt Reeves is The Batman’s new director.
The news comes via Variety, who reports that the War of the Planet of the Apes director has committed to helming Ben Affleck’s Batman movie, but a deal hasn’t been signed just yet. The report also notes that Affleck will still play a “significant role” in the film’s direction, although now he’ll have time to focus more on the acting side of things.
Reeves has a couple of high-profile geek films under his belt already, including Cloverfield and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, both of which were generally well-received and successful financially.
This will mark Reeves’ first attempt at a comic book movie, and if he handles it as well as he has handled the Apes franchise, it looks like we’re all in for a treat.
