Announced yesterday on Twitter, is the official voice replacement for R2-D2. Jimmy Vee is taking over after the late Kenny Baker, who died in August at the age of 81. Baker has played the world’s favorite droid since the original 1977 film A New Hope and he will be missed. Nonetheless, Vee states that “it’s been an absolute pleasure to have worked alongside the legendary Kenny Baker. Kenny was a fantastic actor and taught me all the ‘tricks’ on how he brought R2-D2 to life which I will continue to portray in his honour. I’m so excited to be a part of the Star Wars universe and can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve been working so hard on for the last year.”
Jimmy Vee is also known for roles in Doctor Who and Harry Potter, his usual focus being stunt and double work. So it seems he’ll fit right into the full role of R2-D2, especially since Vee performed some of the work as R2-D2 in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, though Baker was credited. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is certainly one of the most anticipated upcoming Star Wars films, and I think we’ll all be looking forward to seeing what cute jokes R2-D2 will crack this time. The film is currently set to be released December 15th, 2017.
