According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is considering Mel Gibson to direct Suicide Squad 2, thankfully among a few other directors. There has been so official offer or commitment, so we shan’t get our panties in a knot quite yet. Thus far, Gibson is apparently doing nothing more than “familiarizing himself with the material” and according to the announcement on Twitter, “on ‘1st date’ w/ DC on talks to potentially helm Suicide Squad 2.”
The other directors being considered are Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies). All equally good directors with fairly good movies under their belts, unfortunately just like Gibson. The only difference, is Gibson’s recent success with Hacksaw Jaw and generally bad reputation. Some talented people can get a pass for acting up now and then, but Gibson used too many passes one too many times. The director has been caught drink driving, and accused of accused of using the N-word, mocking homosexuals, calling a female police officer “sugar tits,” and claiming that Jewish people secretly run the world.
If that isn’t enough to dissuade Warner Bros. from Gibson, than his directing style should be enough. Suicide Squad 2 is not a story that requires any of Gibson’s trademarks of wide-shots, huge landscapes, and faith-based drama. Unless the studio wants one of the characters to have a sudden crisis of faith.
