According to sources from Batman News, actor David Thewlis is to play the villain Ares in the upcoming film Wonder Woman. The villain was revealed a little bit ago in a French magazine called Studio Ciné Live as part of a large feature.
The information was later backed up when pictures of the film’s action figures were leaked on Twitter, showing Chris Pine as Steve Trevor and part of the “Ares” line, as well as Wonder Woman herself as played by Gal Gadot. Batman News also states that the character Ares will be “a mix of CGI and practical effects” in addition to being the main antagonist of the film.
Though Thewlis is best known for his role in the Harry Potter films as Professor Lupin, I remember him Dragonheart. And let me tell you, he played such a convincing villain in that 90s movie that when I saw him in Harry Potter it took until I read the books to convince me Professor Lupin wasn’t going to turn into a horrible person. So even if it’s just Thewlis’ voice and not that trademark sneer for the CGI character, I’m sure he’ll play an equally convincing Ares.
Others on the movie’s roster include Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Lucy Davis as Etta Candy, and Robin Wright as General Antiope. The film will be directed by Patty Jenkins and will be released June 2nd 2017. How do you think Thewlis will do as Ares? Let us know in the comments below!
