Just last night during the Academy Awards, Netflix presented it’s very first trailer of Bright, starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton (Warrior). The film represents Netflix’s foray into big-budget and big names, changing our world of traditional movie theatres forever.
After quite the bidding war over the property, according to Deadline, Netflix has spent a total of $90 million on this project. This is Netflix’s largest investment yet and judging by this trailer, it looks like it might just pay off. Bright is a cop drama set in the modern world, with the added features of creatures that normally belong in high fantasy, like orcs and elves.
Some have compared the premise to Men in Black, but I see none of that polish here. Where Men in Black was the James Bond for aliens, Bright looks a lot more like the cynical and gritty world of Blade Runner. The images of an orc pumping a shotgun (played by Edgerton) and Smith holding a rusty board sword perfectly display the juxtaposition the film is based on. Normally, such mystical things don’t belong in our world, and the shows that try to combine them stick to either modern or medieval combat. It’s never both like this, and I think that’s what has us all so fascinated.
