Sleeping Dogs, a game by Square Enix, is to be made into a film produced by Neal Moritz, Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons with Toby Ascher and Stephan Bugaj executive producing. The star who will be playing the main character, Wei Shen? None other than Donnie Yen. According to Deadline, he could not the fit the role better as “a Chinese martial artist” and “has long been a fight choreographer.” Yen is best known for his role as Wing Chun in the IP Man franchise, but also starred in Rogue One as Chirrut Îmwe and Xiang in xXx: Return of Xander Cage.
The production company Original Film, founded by Moritz, will be handling this conversion from video game to movie. And who knows, it might achieve what the game could not. However, knowing the general style of Chinese martial art films, that is unlikely. The game is conveys the latter style perfectly, with Wei Shen seeking to destroy a Triad organization, Sun On Yee, and going through bodies as fast he does bullets.
The game itself did not receive rave reviews, but it is nonetheless an action-packed game with a combat system that reflects most fighter games. Also, you can’t go wrong when one of the characters is voiced by Emma Stone.
