According to Coming Soon, the plans for an untitled Venom movie was announced last year, but now Sony has dropped an actual date: October 5th, 2018. If the photo looks a little familiar, we did see Venom in live-action before, in Spider-Man 3 (2007).
However, Coming Soon hints that Venom will not be tied to Sony’s Spider-Man franchise, which means no Tom Holland. I’m not entirely sure how Sony plans on swinging a film about Venom without involving their main Spider-Man version. The character of Venom is rather heavily reliant on being in and out of the series, developing slowly as an ever looming threat while Spider-Man fights off more immediate villains.
For those that don’t know, Venom is much more than just a bad mood Peter Parker was in one day. The Venom comic book series follows an alien that requires a human host to function, called symbiote, though it is far from it.
More From Nerd Much?:
The alien slowly kills its host, for example giving its second host after Spider-Man, Eddie Brock, cancer. In addition, it also depends what universe Sony plans on pulling from, as in the Ultimate universe, Venom was created by Parker and Brock’s parents to cure cancer rather than cause it.
