According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gwendoline Christie, known best for her role in Game of Thrones as Brienne of Tarth, is in negotiations to play a role in Fox’s The Darkest Minds. This film is an adaptation of a book trilogy by Alexandra Bracken about a group of children that have gained super powers.
These powers appear after they survived some kind of plague that only affected the children of the world. The children are subsequently deemed too dangerous and the government gathers them into internment camps organized by super power via colors.
The film is also starring Mandy Moore (Tangled), Amandla Stenberg (Hunger Games), Patrick Gibson (The OA), Harris Dickinson (Silent Witness), Skylan Brooks (Southpaw), Miya Cech (American Horror Story), and Lidya Jewett (Hidden Figures).
Directing the film is Jennifer Yuh Nelson, who is famous for her work on the Kung Fu Panda movies. She’ll be working with producer Shawn Levy, someone that is perhaps infamous for directing the Night At The Museum series.
The Darkest Minds sounds like it will be following the line of similar movies to Hunger Games and Divergent. The books also suffer from a lot of teenage novel tropes, especially The Chosen One syndrome.
Nonetheless, adaptations always have the creativity liberty to interpret the original material however they like. Thus there is hope that The Darkest Minds might appeal to a wider audience as well.
