In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter scriptwriters, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese stated that they are in the midst of Deadpool 2 at the moment and Zombieland 2 is on the horizon “with a hopeful greenlight” to come soon.
The writers certainly made it clear how much they love sequels, hopefully for the creativity and not the profit, so it seems like Zombieland 2 was given for them since the first film.
We should keep in mind that that this is not a confirmation that the sequel is happening, but that the script is written and has been sent in for approval by a studio, presumably Sony.
That said, Sony has been on the sequel bandwagon for quite some time, Smurfs and Ghostbusters being perfect examples, so it’s entirely likely that Wernick and Reese’s “hopeful greenlight” is closer than they think. That, and the major success the first Zombieland movie has in 2009.
If you don’t quite recall, Zombieland was directed by Ruben Fleischer and starred Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and Abigial Breslin.
Though there has been no word yet if these actors will be returning or what the plot of the movie will be. Hopefully, it will be filled with just as much fun and dark humor.
