Joss Whedon To Direct Batgirl Movie
According to Variety, Joss Whedon is going to be directing, producing, and writing an untitled Batgirl movie for Warner Bros. Quite the undertaking, but Whedon has also created the television series Firefly, Angel, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Some of which are considered masterpieces by film critics. Whedon also wrote and directed The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron.
So far, no one else is attached to help created the project yet, but Toby Emmerich, president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, is overseeing it with WB executive Jon Berg, and DC Chief Content Officer Geoff Johns. However this Batgirl project is still fairly new, so more will come on board soon if this goes through.
As to Batgirl herself, she comes in many flavors within the comics and often depicted as Batman’s sidekick along with Robin.
She doesn’t have a consistent backstory or any one particularly popular character arc. As such, it’s up to Whedon to make something of her that is hopefully less a sex symbol and more a superhero children can look up to.
According to Variety, Batgirl will have other characters from Gotham accompanying her. I would prefer ones that didn’t overshadow her, as this is only the second movie that will be starring a female lead, the first being Wonder Woman. Batman, for example, would overshadow her too much. Though I’m sure he has to be involved somehow due to her name.
