Disney announced today the release dates for Frozen 2, November 27th, 2019, and The Lion King live-action film will come July 19th, 2019.
I quite enjoyed the first Frozen film, and not just because Idina Menzel is amazing, though I’m not sure it would make it to my top 5 Disney films. A sequel was inevitable the moment the film came out and no one could stop singing “Let It Go” like they were never ever going to let it go. It was the highest-grossing film of all time after all, with those two Oscars to boot.
That said, Frozen Fever (the short film that was released not long after the original film) did not inspire confidence in a good sequel to Frozen. It was silly and filled with even more lazy writing than the original. Granted, it was aimed at the younger audience, but I fear they will approach Frozen 2 in the same vein. Let’s hope not, and maybe we’ll get more than extremely catchy song out of it.
The animated Lion King serves as the second highest-grossing film of all time, and in theme with Disney’s current trend including Beauty and the Beast and Jungle Book, will also be live-action. As the Broadway play for the film has existed almost as long as the film has, the live-action should work just as smoothly. Perhaps one of my favorite songs from the play, “He Live In You” will be included this time.
