Well, we knew this was coming, folks. It’s made official. Columbia Pictures has announced that Angry Birds 2 will be coming to theatres September 20th, 2019. The date was chosen because it is the 10th anniversary of the mobile game the movies are based on. No plot details were revealed, but judging by the last movie the less we know is probably for the best.
The sequel will have a new team, however. It will be directed by Adventure Time‘s Thurop Van Orman and John Rice, known for yet another adult focused cartoon by the name of Rick and Morty. Rice also directed a few Angry Birds shorts and was the storyboard artist for the first Angry Birds movie.
Peter Ackerman, known for his work on the first Ice Age, will be writing for Angry Birds 2. John Cohen, known for Despicable Me, will be producing. It seems like a lot of very good talent is going into this sequel, so perhaps we will have more thought-provoking comedy than the last movie. That isn’t to say Angry Birds wasn’t a good time, it just lacked that final depth that we’ve come to expect from good movies. Though some of the upcoming cartoon films this year are not promising in this regard.
Furthermore, it appears unlikely that the original voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage, and Maya Rudolph, etc will be coming back for the sequel. This has not yet been confirmed yet, so take this theory with a grain of salt. As much as these actors brought a lot to the movie, it wasn’t quite enough to hold up the mostly tasteless bathroom jokes.
Perhaps, come September 20th, 2019, Angry Birds 2 can redeem the first.
