Star War: Episode IX will be getting three writers to compose the script, with John Thorne joining the most recently. It seems that director Colin Trevorrow and scribe Derek Connolly have need a bit of assistance, though it is unclear if this is an extensive rewrite or just another pair of eyes for editing.
Thorne is responsible for the upcoming film Wonder, which stars Julia Roberts and Jacob Tremblay. He is otherwise known for his work on several TV shows, including The Fades, The Cast-Offs, The Last Panthers, and National Treasure. If that isn’t enough to show the man’s talent, he is currently working on the TV mini-series of His Dark Materials, an adaptation of a book series by Philip Pullman.
The latter is an adaptation that has been in the works for quite some time, at least a year. It’s a difficult one to get right, especially with the disastrous flop The Golden Compass that Nicole Kidman starred in. I do highly recommend the books themselves, however. Thorne is also one of the fellows who worked on the script to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. More sci-fi related, he’s also a part of the team that is putting together Philip K. Dick’s Electric Sheep for Channel 4. Thorne has definitely been around the block, that’s for sure!
Stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, and Oscar Isaac are expected to return to the same roles they had in Force Awakens for Episode IX, but it has not yet been confirmed. Nonetheless, Episode IX will begin filming at the beginning of next year, January 2018, with a scheduled release date of May 24, 2019.
That said, the eighth instalment of the series Star Wars: The Last Jedi will premier December 15, 2017. The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson, note that he is not a part of the Episode IX writing team.
