One of the hottest duos in the television and film industry have apparently decided what their next big project will be. And it’s a doozy. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the men behind HBO’s Game of Thrones, are moving onto Star Wars.
While Game of Thrones is based upon A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, Benioff and Weiss have really made the HBO take on the series their own. Martin has only finished five of the planned seven books in the series, so Benioff and Weiss have largely taken the conclusion of the series in their own direction.
Game of Thrones is largely considered one of the most popular shows in the world. And with the series’ upcoming conclusion landing in 2019, the pair have apparently decided to go work with Disney next to craft the next evolution of Star Wars lore.
Disney broke the news just minutes ago via StarWars.com. While the announcement was very light on details, they did confirm a few things. It will be a “series” of films that Benioff and Weiss will be working on within the Star Wars universe. And said films will be completely separate from the trilogy of films that Rian Johnson is already plotting for the future of the series. It was also confirmed that the duo’s take on the franchise would be removed from the Skywalker saga.
Here is the official statement from Benioff and Weiss:
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, went on to say that “David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today. Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
We likely won’t know much more about these upcoming projects for a long, long time. But the news is incredibly exciting nonetheless.
