News is beginning to circulate stating that Todd Phillips has targeted who he hopes to take on the role of the Clown Prince of Crime. Variety had the scoop and is reporting that the director is targeting none other than Joaquin Phoenix to take on the role of the Joker.
The role would not be connected with the current DC Extended Universe. Instead, this film would be the one previously announced that is set to be directed by Todd Phillips and produced by Martin Scorsese.
There isn’t a contractual agreement in place yet between Warner Bros. and Phoenix as the studio has yet to green light the move. However, after a meeting with Phillips, Phoenix is said to have had time to mull the role over and has agreed to sign on. It’s now Phillips who is fighting to get the multiple Academy Award nominee onboard with the project with the studio heads at Warner Bros.
This film will have no bearing on the version of the character in the DCEU. Jared Leto, who has appeared as the Joker in Suicide Squad, is still set to reprise that role in future films in that universe.
Phillips is signed on to direct and co-write the project alongside Scott Silver. It’s said that this movie will be listed under a new banner of projects for Warner Bros. and DC Comics. The new label will consist of side stories and one-offs that have no relation to the already established film universe.
Todd Phillips’ Joker movie is apparently an origin tale for the iconic charcater. Reports indicate that this film will take place in the ’80s and see feel more akin to a gritty gangster/crime drama than a typical comic book movie.
Only time will tell whether Warner Bros. signs off on the Phoenix getting the gig. But should he officially land the role he would sure make an interesting Joker.
