20th Century Fox has finally gifted us our first trailer for the Shane Black helmed The Predator today. The movie looks to be a continuation of the series and not a hard reboot. Yet very unlike the prior entries in the franchise.
The trailer opens with a young boy, Rory, opening a package on Halloween. There’s no context as to why the package was sent, but it’s addressed to Rory’s father, Quinn McKenna. And inside the box are artifacts pertaining to the aliens central to The Predator series. As Rory toys with a device he finds, it appears to signal to an alien ship and summons the creatures back to Earth.
Plot descriptions state that the aliens are smarter and deadlier than ever before. The creatures have genetically upgraded their DNA from other species to make themselves far more dangerous.
Back in September, 20th Century Fox’s CEO briefly spoke with Variety about the movie. And he indicated that the setting would be far removed from the lush jungles we’re used to:
“We’ve got a Predator film coming out that is unexpected and utterly fresh. I just imagined that it would take 500 hours to read the script — that it would be interior jungle, exterior more jungle and then fighting happens, but Emma [Watts] went out and recruited Shane Black. From the first page, it didn’t read like a “Predator” film. It’s set in suburbia. There’s a little boy and his dad at the center of the action.”
The little boy, obviously, is Rory, played by Jacob Tremblay (The Room). His father, Quinn, is played by Boyd Holbrook (Logan, Narcos). The overall cast is stacked outside of the father and son duo. Included in the film are Olivia Munn, Trevante Rhoades, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Yvonne Strahovski, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Jake Busey and Edward James Olmos.
20th Century Fox has slated The Predator to release on September 14th. To see what other horror titles are headed our way, checkout Nerd Much’s comprehensive list here.
