Star Wars Boba Fett Movie On the Way

While Solo is opening today to lukewarm reviews, Disney and Lucasfilm already have their sights set on the future of their A Star Wars Story line of films. And the newest one added to the potential slate is none other than the long rumored Boba Fett movie.Boba Fett

The project has been rumored for years, essentially since Disney acquired Lucasfilm back in October of 2012. Simon Kinberg, a writer and producer on The Martian and the X-Men series of films, was reportedly attached. However, a new entity has entered the mix. It’s now being reported that James Mangold has been brought on to officially write and direct the upcoming side story.

Mangold has several big budget films under his belt. He directed the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic, Walk the Line, 2007’s 3:10 to Yuma and the Tom Cruise led Knight and Day. However his most recent, and perhaps notable efforts are The Wolverine and Logan.

Simon Kinsberg worked closely with Mangold during the development of Logan. And he’ll do so again with the Boba Fett film. He’s expected to co-write the story with Mangold as well as serve as producer.

It’s unclear when Disney and Lucasfilm are hoping to enter production for the bounty hunter’s story. Following Solo’s release, there isn’t another Star Wars side story officially in development. The Obi-Wan Kenobi movie has been long rumored. Stephen Daldry has reported been in negotiations to direct, but even Ewan McGregor is apparently unaware if the project will actually happen. There’s even been recent suggestions that a movie centering on Lando Calrissian could be coming down the line.

There are numerous directions Lucasfilm could take on the Fett story. It could be a prequel that perhaps reveals how an unaltered clone became the most feared bounty hunter in the galaxy. Or a movie set shortly after Return of the Jedi that shows that Fett wasn’t pathetically taken out by the Sarlaccs’s mouth, and went on to continue his own adventures.

Boba Fett is one of the most revered characters in the Star Wars universe. But fans were never pleased with the character’s backstory, or the way he went out. There are plenty of ways to fix this, let’s hope Mangold and Kinsberg deliver.
