New Netflix Sci-Fi Film, Extinction, Releases July 27th

It wasn't all a dream.

A father has a recurring dream of losing his family. His nightmare turns into reality when the planet is invaded by a force bent on destruction. Now, fighting for their lives, he comes to realize an unknown strength to keep them safe from harm. Starring Michael Peña, Lizzy Caplan, and Mike Colter.

Watch recurring dreams come to life this summer as what appears to be a form of an alien invasion threatens life on earth as we know it. Extinction is a cryptic Netflix sci-fi film makes the mundane eerie when this dad is more than just a bit paranoid, but rather can see into the future itself. It appears that, by the time everyone believes him, it’s far too late.

The fact that he uncovers “an unknown strength” makes me wonder if this will take an action based twist. The trailer seems to suggest more of  suspenseful supernatural thriller, which seems more in Netflix’s wheelhouse to begin with. Hopefully Extinction can win over our hearts the way so much of Netflix’s content does.

In comparison to other Netflix productions, this sci-fi movie seems a bit typical: apocalypse-type events, aliens, everyone thinks the person with the knowledge is “crazy,” and other cliches. But Netflix is famous for taking calculated risks with the material they crank out and, more importantly, those risks having a huge pay off. Viewers are already reaction positively to the casting of Michael Peña, who is known to excel in a variety of roles: from the comedic to the dramatic. Which bodes well for getting us immersed in this sci-fi story.

Will Extinction be a sleeper hit or a skip of the summer? And what do you think might set this movie apart from other films of its genre? Let us know in the comments below. And find out for sure when the movie release July 27th.
