20th Century Fox debuted their first Dark Phoenix trailer last night. And while we don’t see a full blown transformation of Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey going full Phoenix, we do begin to see the underlying current leading toward it.
All the principle players appear to be back as seen in the Dark Phoenix trailer. James McAvoy returns Charles Xavier. Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto. Sophie Turner returns as the focal point of the movie in Jean Grey. Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult are here as Mystique and Beast. Tye Sheridan is Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp is Storm, Evans Peter is here again as Quicksilver, Alexandra Shipp returns as Storm and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler.
Attached to the movie’s first trailer, here’s Dark Phoenix’s official synopsis:
“In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.”
In this first Dark Phoenix trailer we don’t get to see this “mysterious cosmic force” that attacks Jean in space. We do, however, get to see its repercussions. Jean becomes disturbed by events in her past to the point that she seeks out Magneto to help deal with the answers she seeks.
McAvoy’s Xavier has apparently been trying to assist with Jean’s issues by subduing her via telepathy. Something that Raven / Mystique chastises him for. It doesn’t take long for Magneto to encourage Jean to let her feels flow. Something that is likely enticed further by the unseen shapeshifting character Jessica Chastain is set to play in the film.
Charles surely attempts to dissuade Jean’s newfound lust for carnage. In the trailer we cut to a quick clip of Xavier (likely spliced from different scenes) saying “I’m sorry I didn’t stop it sooner.” To which Magneto replies with fantastic arrogance, “You’re always sorry, Charles. And there’s always a speech. But nobody cares.”
The stakes begin to ramp up from there. We never outright see the Dark Phoenix in action, but we constantly see characters in state of shock and horror. But one of the final clips within the Dark Phoenix trailer is that of Jean Grey being completely consumed by flames. Hopefully we’ll get much more of the titular character in the next trailer.
A long time coming, the Dark Phoenix trailer delivered. It’s a great first look at the movie, I for one am excited to see more. Dark Phoenix hits theaters on February 14th.
