Ridley Scott’s Gladiator was a powerhouse in film when it released in 2000. The film itself won the Oscar for Best Picture that year. Russell Crowe won Best Actor for his leading portrayal of General Maximus Decimus Meridius. And the picture gathered other accolades including Best Visual Effects, Best Costume Design and Best Sound Mixing. The ending of the film didn’t exactly lend itself toward a sequel, but that’s apparently not stopping Scott. New reports indicate that the filmmaker has set his sights on continuing the story in a Gladiator 2.
Gladiator 2 is said to be centered around the character Lucius, son of Lucilla. Lucius was a nephew to Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus. The villainous character stole the throne by murdering his own father, Marcus Aurelius, and was the foil to Crowe’s Maximus throughout the original movie.
It doesn’t sound as though Gladiator 2 is something that Scott is hoping to get to eventually, the ball is rolling quite quickly on the potential sequel. Scott has already tapped Peter Craig to write the script. His previous efforts include The Town, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. He also wrote the script for 2020’s Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
Paramount is on board to develop the movie with Universal having the option to co-finance. Other producing credits belong to Ridley Scott’s Scott Free, Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher of Red Wagon, and Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald of Parkes + MacDonald.
While the various parties are hoping that production will begin sooner than later on Gladiator 2, Ridley Scott has his hands full currently. The director is currently helming his first television show in TNT’s Raised by Wolves. He also has a project lined up with Scarlett Johansson attached about photojournalist Lyndsey Addario. There’s also been word that he’s interested in directing a take on Merlin currently in the works at Disney.
We’ll have to wait and see whether Gladiator 2 gets the thumbs up or the thumbs down as things continue to develop.
