Netflix Drops New Mowgli Trailer, Announces Theatrical and Streaming Release Dates

Back in July, Netflix announced that they had acquired the rights to Andy Serkis’ Mowgli. The film is yet another adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s beloved 1894 title, The Jungle Book. Today the studio confirmed that in addition to the movie hitting their streaming platform, it would also be getting a limited theatrical run. And to build hype, Netflix released a fresh Mowgli trailer today too.

Netflix stated that started on November 29th, Mowgli “will have exclusive limited theatrical engagements” in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and London. Following that, the movie will begin streaming on Netflix December 7th, and it will also see “an expanded theatrical release in additional theaters” that day too across the United States and United Kingdom.

Today’s Mowgli trailer is another fantastic look at Andy Serkis’ unique view on the property. In this rendition, Mowgli doesn’t just observe man curiously from the sidelines until the end. It seems apparent that Mowgli’s indoctrination into the local human civilization is a huge part of this film. And then the character appears poised to play a massive role in healing the relationship between the locale and the animals of the jungle.

This is important, of course, because Serkis’ Mowgli needs to do something to differentiate itself from the recent live-action/CGI The Jungle Book that Jon Favreau recently did for Disney. This latest Mowgli trailer does an excellent job hinting to audiences that these may be two very different takes on Kipling’s original story.

If the unique property isn’t enough to excite you though, maybe the all-star cast is. Here’s Netflix’s breakdown of the film, which includes a running tally of all the A-list talent involved:

“Mowgli (Rohan Chand) has never truly belonged in either the wilds of the jungle or the civilized world of man. Now he must navigate the inherent dangers of each on a journey to discover where he truly belongs. Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andy Serkis, Freida Pinto, Matthew Rhys and Naomie Harris lead an all-star cast along with newcomer Rohan Chand in this visually spectacular and emotionally moving adventure.”
