We know that Toy Story 4 arrives in theaters this coming June, but after that Pixar has been relatively mum. They previously teased at D23 that their next story would revolve around a “suburban fantasy”. Now, that suburban fantasy has as title – Onward.
Disney and Pixar aren’t giving up much in regards to Onward. The film’s director, Dan Scanlon, stated in a press release that “At Pixar we try to create stories that come from some kind of personal truth.” And that Onward “was inspired by my own relationship with my brother.”
Scanlon’s relationship with his brother will be conveyed on screen by a duo of teenage elves. And those two elves are to be played by a couple of fellas that Disney and Marvel fans are quite familiar with – Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Chris Pratt and Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Tom Holland. Disney and Pixar confirmed that the fantastic Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer will have roles in the movie as well.
The movie itself is said to revolve around a world in which fantasy beings such as trolls, elves, centaurs and the like live within a mundane world much like our own. Cell phones and fast food are the norm, and magic seems to be a thing of the past.
The brothers that Pratt and Holland portray venture out into the world in the hopes of finding whether magic truly exists anymore. And surely, they’ll run into plenty of shenanigans along the way.
With the announcement of Onward, Disney and Pixar also confirmed that the movie will be arriving in theaters March 6th, 2020. Hopefully the studios will drop a trailer at some point over the coming months so we can get a look at this world first hand. But at the latest, I imagine we’ll get a good look at the project with a trailer attached to Toy Story 4 when it arrives next year.
