Netflix certainly has its share of post apocalyptic offerings on its streaming service. And now you can add another to the list. The studio released their first IO trailer earlier today. Arriving in just a couple of weeks, the exclusive film showcases an Earth turned toxic. It tells the story of what happens to those that were left behind following humanity’s departure for Jupiter’s moon, Io.
Falcon himself, Anthony Mackie, is one of the two starts of the film. But after watching the IO trailer, he clearly isn’t the lead. That honor goes to Margaret Qualley in the role of Sam. If you were a fan of HBO’s (masterpiece) The Leftovers, you’ll recognize Qualley as Kevin Garvey’s daughter, Jill.
IO was written by Clay Jeto, Charles Spano and Will Basanta. The project was directed by Jonathan Helpert. Here’s the official synopsis of the upcoming flick thanks to Netflix:
Sam, one of the last survivors on a post-cataclysmic Earth, is a young scientist dedicated to finding a way for humans to adapt and survive, rather than abandon their world. But with the final shuttle scheduled to leave the planet for a distant colony, her determination to stay is rocked by the arrival of another survivor, Micah. She must decide whether to journey with him to join the rest of humanity and begin life anew, or stay to fight for Earth’s survival.”
Danny Huston is also in the movie as Sam’s father, Henry. Based upon the IO trailer, it feels as though Henry as past during the timeframe we’re seeing. Likely making Huston’s appearances flashbacks of sorts as Sam works through attempts at resuscitation the planet.
