At a time when some fantastic Netflix exclusives are coming hot and heavy, it looks like we can throw another one on the list. The studio released their first Velvet Buzzsaw trailer which showcases the horror thriller’s dark plot and big name cast.
The story is an abstract one. A fantastic artist is found dead and it turns out he’s been painting with blood on many of his works. Being a movie, these paintings end up having horrific abilities. And those that come into contact with them each appear to meet their demise. Here’s Netflix’s breakdown:
“Set in the shallow, vapid world of L.A.’s contemporary art scene, where big money artists and mega-collectors pay a high price when art collides with commerce, the film revolves around a series of paintings found in a dead hermit’s apartment.
Stunned by how surrealistic the paintings are, local art gallery owner Morf Vandewalt and his assistant Rhodora Haze put the artwork up for display to the public. The paintings, however, turn out to be cursed with the supernatural ability to come to life and soon those who buy them begin to be consumed by the deranged entity possessing the morbid pictures.”
While the Velvet Buzzsaw trailer itself impresses, the cast list only heightens it. Leading the Netflix exclusive are Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo. With a supporting staff consisting of Zawe Ashton, Natalia Dyer, Tom Sturridge, Daveed Diggs, Toni Collette, John Malkovich and Billy Magnussen.
The project was written and directed by Dan Gilroy. He previously directed Nightcrawler in which Gyllenhaal also starred alongside Russo – to whom Gilroy is married. And he co-wrote Kong: Skull Island with Max Borenstein and Derek Connolly.
Like many projects from Netflix, we won’t have long to wait after seeing the Velvet Buzzsaw trailer. The movie will premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and then begin streaming for Netflix on February 1st.
