Yesterday, we got a hilarious teaser for this trailer as we watched the voice actor for Detective Pikachu, Ryan Reynolds, go full on method actor.
Now, the second Detective Pikachu trailer is finally here and this time around we get an in-depth look at the story. Watch the world of Pokémon come to life in the trailer below.
While there have been plenty of Pokémon movies, this is the first ever live-action look at the franchise. So far, almost all the depictions of the Pokémon have been impressively detailed and whimsical (albeit, Lickitung is not one of them).
In the move, Harry Goodman has gone missing and his son, Tim, is trying to find out what happened. The story centers on a Pikachu who wakes up with amnesia. His only connection to his past is the name and address of old investigative partner, Harry Goodman.
When Detective Pikachu gets there, he meets Harry’s son. Unlike other humans, Tim can understand what this Pikachu is saying. With Tim’s ability to talk to humans and Detective Pikachu’s ability to talk to Pokémon, the two decide to work together to figure out what really happened to detective Harry Goodman.
In addition to Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu, the cast is made up of plenty of other stars.
Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) as Tim, and Kathryn Newton (Lady Bird, TV’s Big Little Lies) as Lucy, a junior reporter following her first big story; as well as Suki Waterhouse (Insurgent), Omar Chaparro (Overboard), Chris Geere (TV’s Modern Family), with Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe (Godzilla, The Last Samurai) and Bill Nighy (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1).
Pokémon Detective Pikachu opens in theaters on May 10, 2019. For even more Pokémon related news, be sure to tune into tomorrow’s Pokémon direct.
