Toy Story 4 Trailer Questions the Meaning of Life – for a Toy

After getting a few teasers here and there, Disney and Pixar have finally brought out the big guns. Our first full Toy Story 4 trailer has arrived.

The Toy Story 4 trailer begins with Tom Hanks’ Woody introducing Bonnie’s new favorite toy to the group. Though he’s more of an arts and crafts project than a child’s play thing, Forky (voiced by the fantastic Tony Hale) isn’t exactly a toy and he knows it.

“I am not a toy. I was made for soup, salad, maybe chili. And then the trash!” as the spork launches himself from the RV window into the night. Woody climbs up after Forky, eventually getting himself thrown the vehicle as well in the process.

He does catch up with Forky though, and the duo then begins to hold a deep conversation. “Why am I alive?” Forky asks. Woody emotionally explains, “You’re Bonnie’s toy. You are going to help create happy memories that will last for the rest of her life.” He then looks down at Forky to frustratingly realize the spork hasn’t been paying attention to this life lesson whatsoever.

We’re then taken to the antique shop that we see in the background of the carnival in prior footage. It’s here that Bo Peep has been for some time. Woody enters the shop upon realizing this and is quickly bombarded by some creepy ventriloquist dolls. Out of nowhere, Bo Peep shows up like a badass and saves Woody’s hide.

The cowboy tells her that they need to get back to “our kid.” She retorts “who needs a kid’s room when you can have all of this?” The camera then pans to showcase the entire carnival, with the Toy Story 4 trailer seemingly teasing Woody’s decision to remain behind.

We then cut to the rest of Bonnie’s toys, all set and ready to go rescue their fearless leader from the carnival. At some point, of course, Woody realizes that being with Bonnie is where he belongs. And we see him catching a glimpse of her before chasing after the RV. However, the shot looks to be from the same time that Woody and Forky first fell from the vehicle, so there’s some misdirection here.

For as much as was doled out in the Toy Story 4 trailer, we still know little about the film. And much of the footage we got today is surely spliced together in a way that won’t divulge too much of the true plot. There are hints that there will be an existential crisis of sorts for Woody, making him question what his purpose as a toy truly is. We’ll go on that journey with him when the film hits theaters June 21st. Until then, feast your eyes on the awesome new poster Disney released below, and check out more upcoming cartoon movies here.
