We got our first taste at the Men in Black franchises soft reboot when Sony unveiled the first trailer back in December. Four months later, we get to see a bit more of the plot within today’s new Men in Black: International trailer.
Tessa Thompson’s Agent M gets a bit of a backstory within the new Men in Black: International trailer. We see that as a child she witnesses two MIB agents (perhaps a Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones nod here?) using their neuralyzer to erase the memory of her parents. From that moment on, it became her lifelong quest to find the agency and demand that they accept her among their ranks.
This ploy apparently works eventually. Thompson’s character is taken in and assigned the aforementioned role of Agent M and the MIB UK branch. It’s here that she’s partnered up with a more veteran agent in Chris Hemsworth’s Agent H.
There are plenty of comedic moments spattered throughout the new Men in Black: International trailer, ensuring that the globetrotting sci-fi flick will see be light in tone despite the stakes being higher than ever. We’re introduced to Kumail Nanjiani’s cute and wisecracking alien here, Pawny, who’s likely to provide plenty of comedic relief as well.
The movie’s main threat finally gets a name and some screen time in the new Men in Black: International trailer. They’re known as The Hive, and they have the ability to alter their appearance to mimic anyone they’d like. The official synopsis for the film reads that “In this new adventure, they tackle their biggest, most global threat to date: a mole in the Men in Black organization.”
A shot in the trailer sees Agent M and Agent H riding an advanced motorcycle of sorts right towards a large group of MIB agents. These could be The Hive in disguise, or M and H may just be at a point in the story where they can’t trust anyone but each other.
The movie looks like it could be a return to form for the series. There’s plenty of laughs, aliens, crazy guns, and action. The 4th entry in the MIB series lands in theaters June 14th. Though we’ll see Hemsworth much sooner than that in Avengers: Endgame – and perhaps Thompson too.
