Netflix began promoting their next big sci-fi movie exclusive today with their first I Am Mother trailer. Starring Hilary Swank, Clara Rugaard, and the voice of Rose Byrne, the movie’s story revolves around a maternal A.I. raising a teenage girl without revealing to her that humanity has been nearly eradicated by robots.
The official synopsis for the series says that the “sci-fi thriller [is] about a teenage girl (Clara Rugaard), who is the first of a new generation of humans to be raised by Mother (Rose Byrne), a robot designed to repopulate the earth after the extinction of humankind. But the pair’s unique relationship is threatened when an injured stranger (Hilary Swank) arrives with news that calls into question everything Daughter has been told about the outside world and her Mother’s intentions.”
Within the I Am Mother trailer, you can see human embryos stored within the station in which Byrne’s Mother operates. She develops Rugaard’s Daughter embrio, and then raises her solely up into her teens.
The dynamic between Mother and Daughter radically changes when Hilary Swank’s character abrupted arrives outside the station one day. With Daughter believing humans to be extinct, she now questions everything Mother has taught her about the race existence.
Swank’s character must convince Daughter to escape the confines of the station at some point, as we see the duo running through some cornfields with an aerial ship tracking them down. Whether it’ll just be these two on the run or there’s a human resistance out there somewhere, we’ll have to wait and see.
Netflix’s I Am Mother trailer looks exciting to say the least. The studio has scheduled the movie to release on June 7th. While doubtful, it’ll be curious to see whether Hilary Swank’s other sci-fi Netflix project, Away, has anything to do with this film which releases first.
