Lionsgate’s Saw franchise has been one of the most successful in modern horror history. The series culminated with 2010’s Saw: The Final Chapter, but another take was attempted with 2017’s Jigsaw set ten years later. The film did fine, but the studio is apparently ready to take the series into a new direction as a Saw spinoff is on the way with the story being conceived by legendary comedian, Chris Rock.
Long time series producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules will team up with Rock on the Saw’s newest form. The project is being described as both “a reimaging and a spinning off of the franchise.” Lionsgate is fast tracking the movie, slating it for an October 2020 debut.
Lionsgate’s Chairman, Joe Drake, raved about Rock’s pitch to the studio, saying “When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins-off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in.”
Drake then continued, “Saw is one of the highest grossing horror franchises of all-time and it’s one of Lionsgate’s most successful film series. This upcoming film will still be as mind bending and intense as all the previous Saw films. Chris conceived this idea and it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the material while reinvigorating the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise.”
The Saw spinoff, revolving around Chris Rock’s pitch story, will be written by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg. Lynn Bousman, director of Saw 2, Saw 3 and Saw 4, will helm the film.
Chris Rock will executive produce the project alongside Daniel Heffer and the Saw series’ original creators, James Wan and Leigh Whannell. In statement expressing his love for the series, Rock confirmed “I’ve been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004. I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place.”
The untitled Saw spinoff will launch for Lionsgate on October 23rd, 2020. For other horror movies headed our way soon, check out our complete list here.
