With John Wick 3 performing so well, the talent involved in the project is certainly being eyed for others across Hollywood. The movie’s writer, Derek Kolstad, certainly knows how to pen action sequences, and thus has been tapped to flesh out another high octane franchise. Kolstad has been named as the writer on Square Enix’s Just Cause movie.
Kolstad is credited as the sole writer on John Wick and John Wick 2. He worked alongside Shay Hatten, Chris Collins and Marc Abrams on the series’ recent third installment. John Wick 4 has been confirmed for 2021, but Lionsgate didn’t confirm whether Kolstad would be back to handle scripting duties.
Derek Kolstad’s Just Cause movie isn’t the first attempt to bring the franchise to film. In 2010, a project dubbed Just Cause: Scorpion Rising was in early production from a script written by current DC Comics writer, Bryan Edward Hill. The movie was ultimately never produced.
A few years later in 2015, Adrian Askariehalso, a producer on the Hitman film series suggested that a shared movie universe across the various Square Enix properties was something the team was looking to establish. Said universe would include Just Cause, Hitman, Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and Thief. However, the team didn’t actually have the movie rights to Tomb Raider – perhaps the most important of the bunch. Needless to say, nothing ever came to fruition.
When news of a Just Cause movie geared up again a couple of years ago, it was reported that Jason Momoa would play Rico Rodriguez and that Brad Peyton would direct the adaptation. It was expected that the project would be based around the events of Just Cause 3, but as last year, Peyton admitted that a script had yet to be developed.
Now that Kolstad is on board to write up the flick, we may be hearing more about it soon as the gears begin to churn. Just don’t hold out hope that the Square Enix cinematic universe ever actually happens.
