For now, Disney is actually calling it simply Genies, and it will be a live-action comedy adventure written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. Of course, the original Aladdin was based on an old Arabic folk tale and was brought to an animated movie form in 1992 famously by Disney, with the late Robin Williams voicing Genie.
Aladdin is one of the best animated movies of all time, and especially without Robin Williams, it’s going to be rather difficult to do the franchise any justice. That’s not to say that we’re already writing it off, but we’re simply not sure just how good of an idea this actually is.
According to THR, this new Aladdin prequel movie will focus on genies and will reveal how Genie — the one Aladdin freed — ended up in the iconic lamp in the first place.
We don’t know much else about the upcoming project, but we’ll be sure to keep tabs on it throughout its development here at Nerd Much. Hopefully, we’ll get a Genies release date/window soon, as well as see what sort of cast Disney can put together for the film.
