2016 has been a pretty great year for movies so far. Not only have we seen the best Star Trek movie of the past ten years, but we’ve also seen numerous other sci-fi flicks, superhero movies, some great action, and even some unique horror, a rarity in the genre. Some of our favorite movies of 2016 so far include Star Trek Beyond, The Conjuring 2, and Green Room.
There are still quite a few movies to look forward to in Q3 and Q4 2016, but that’s not going to stop us from looking ahead to the must-see movies of 2017. There are well over 30 movies that we’re excited to see in theaters next year, but for the sake of those who want to cherry pick the movies they want to see, we’re limited this list to just our 30 most anticipated movies.
The list below contains our list of the most anticipated 30 must-see upcoming movies of 2017, including the potential best in sci-fi, action, superhero films, animation, and horror.
1. Thor: Ragnarok
Release Date: May 5, 2017
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Karl Urban, Idris Elba, Cate Blanchett
Genre: Superhero Action
2017 is filled with numerous superhero movies that we’re looking forward to next year, and Thor: Ragnarok is one of those movies. It’s being directed by Taika Waititi, whose most well-known project to date is What We Do in the Shadows, a horror comedy. Ragnarok will be the third standalone `Thor movie and the 17th movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and hopefully, it can continue on the quality set by its Marvel predecessors.
Most interesting about Ragnarok is the fact that it will star Idris Elba as Heimdall and Anthony Hopkins as Odin, as well as Jurassic Park‘s Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster.
Of course, it’s no surprise that we’re getting this third film in the standalone series, as Kevin Feige stated that some of the elements at the end of The Dark World hinted at a third film, noting that they “definitely have a story [they’d] like to tell.”
Thor: Ragnarok will hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Release Date: November 3, 2017
Starring: Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Sylvester Stallone
Genre: Superhero Action
Guardians of the Galaxy is hands-down the most unique film in the MCU so far, thanks to its band of unlikely heroes that were simply, well, cool. Luckily, Marvel is bringing back that band of heroes with a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, bringing back Gamora, Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon and Groot.
The sequel will add a few interesting new actors into the mix, including Nathan Fillion as Wonder Man, Kurt Russell as Ego (Star Lord’s dad), and Sons of Anarchy actor Tommy Flanagan as Yondu’s right-hand man.
Of course, with the new sequel, we’re hoping to get yet another stellar mixtape soundtrack — literally a Vol. 2 — that will be in the same vein as the first film’s soundtrack. Setting a band of misfits in a superhero world always has potential for success, and we don’t doubt that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will be a success.
3. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Release Date: December 15, 2017
Starring: Daisy Ridley, Gwendoline Christie, Mark Hamill, John Boyega
Genre: Sci-fi Action Adventure
While Star Wars: Episode VII was a polarizing experience, we fall on the side that absolutely loved it. While our current mindset is focused on this year’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, we still have room in our hearts for Episode VIII, and we’re anxiously awaiting its December 2017 release.
The movie wrapped up filming in July 2016, and now it’ll go through numerous edits and promotion before fans are able to watch it in December of next year. After a year hiatus to make room for Rogue One, Rey, Finn, Poe, Luke and more will make their return.
Episode 8 will be directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, Breaking Bad), and it will be the director’s biggest movie to date. John Williams will return to score the film, as was announced earlier this month.
We don’t know much about the story details for Episode VIII, but once Rogue One is out, we’ll hear more about the movie. We have a lot of questions we want to be answered in Episode 8. For example, what will Episode VIII be named? Will Luke survive the movie? Who are Rey’s parents? Will Kylo Ren throw more tantrums? For now, we know none of these answers officially, which is just one of the reasons that Star Wars: Episode VIII is one of our most anticipated movies of 2017.

4. Power Rangers
Release Date: March 24, 2017
Starring: Elizabeth Banks, Bryan Cranston, Naomi Scott
Genre: Action Adventure
The upcoming Power Rangers movie is undoubtedly going to be different than the television series that we all loved in the 90s, especially if the character shot of Rita Repulsa (as played by Elizabeth Banks) is any indication. And, the movie’s hype is at an all-time high, as Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer seems to have high hopes for the franchise revival.
The Power Rangers film will star Naomi Scott as The Pink Ranger, Becky G. as The Yellow Ranger, RJ Cyler as The Blue Ranger, Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger, and Dacre Montgomery as The Red Ranger. Most of these names are pretty much unknown to us, but one name everyone should know is also attached to the project: Bryan Cranston (he’ll play Zordon). The film is being directed by Dean Israelite of Project Almanac fame, and it’s easily his biggest movie to date.
The new movie will be a reimagining of the franchise, and it looks to be an updated Power Rangers for a new generation of potential fans. The new suits debuted earlier this year, with production designer Andrew Menzies noting that the suits are now an alien costume and not man-made as they were in the series. It’s an attempt to appeal to more mature audiences with the hopes of getting new fans. We don’t hate the suits, but we don’t love them either.
Despite the strange suits and possible Michael Bay-esque direction it appears to be taking, the Power Rangers movie is one of our most anticipated blockbuster movies of 2017.
5. Kong: Skull Island
Release Date: March 10, 2017
Starring: Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, John Goodman, Samuel L. Jackson
Genre: Sci-fi Action Adventure
Another big blockbuster film is set to be released in March, with Kong: Skull Island slated for release on March 10th. The new adventure movie is directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings of Summer), and it has quite a few notable actors attached to it (including Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, John Goodman and Samuel L. Jackson).
Kong: Skull Island will take place in the 1970s and will center on Kong’s origins, focusing on a team of explorers who venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific in the hopes of finding the mythical giant gorilla known only as Kong.
This is, of course, not to be confused with the upcoming Godzilla vs. Kong movie that Legendary has set for 2020, although the two films will share the same universe of classic and new giant super-species.
The first Kong: Skull Island trailer made its debut at Comic-Con in San Diego earlier this year, and the movie looks absolutely breathtaking. It will contain massive set pieces, beautiful cinematography, and our first look at Kong in his new cinematic universe. If the trailer is anything to go by, the King Kong franchise is in good hands with Vogt-Roberts.
The Kong: Skull Island release date is currently set for March 10, 2017.
6. Alien: Covenant
Release Date: August 4, 2017
Starring: Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Danny McBride
Genre: Sci-fi Horror
We’ve been waiting for a good Alien movie for awhile now, and it looks like next year’s Alien: Covenant might just be that movie. Ridley Scott, director of the original 1979 film, will return to direct the Prometheus sequel, with Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender in tow to star.
In Alien: Covenant, the crew of the Covenant ship discovers what they believe to be an uncharted paradise, but it’s actually a dangerous world inhabited only by a synthetic being (played by Fassbender). Of course, with Prometheus leaving so many questions unanswered, we’re hoping that Scott will provide some answers in this upcoming sci-fi sequel.
Covenant will serve as the first of three Prometheus sequels, and we’re told that we’ll find out in one of the sequels who actually created the xenomorph aliens. We doubt we’ll get that answer so soon, as it’s likely to not be revealed in the second film. However, maybe by the end of the movie we might be able to draw our own conclusions to speculate while we wait for the third film in the franchise.
The film will be scored by Harry Gregson-Williams, who also composed the soundtrack for The Martian.
Alien: Covenant is just one of the many upcoming sci-fi movies of 2017 we’re looking forward to, but it’s definitely near the top of the list.
7. World War Z 2
Release Date: June 9, 2017
Starring: Brad Pitt, Cristian Lazar
Genre: Zombies, Action, Horror
Love it or hate it, the World War Z movie starring Brad Pitt was certainly a unique take on the zombie genre (which, admittedly, veered off the book’s path, but that’s a story for another day). Still, we’re looking forward to a World War Z sequel solely because it will reunite Pitt with director David Fincher, the man behind such popular Pitt movies as Fight Club, Se7en, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. There’s no denying that Fincher is a top-notch film director, and we can’t wait to see what sort of changes he brings to the World War Z universe.
Somehow, although the movie is slated for summer 2017, we still don’t even have a plot synopsis or a full cast list. We do know that it was originally planned as a trilogy with grounded realism, so hopefully Fincher can make the zombies a bit more believable this time around (and maybe slow them down a bit, too). We’re excited to see if World War Z 2 can reinvigorate the zombie movie genre, which is plagued by a ton of all too samey stuff.

8. The Lego Batman Movie
Release Date: February 10, 2017
Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Roasario Dawson, Zach Galifianakis
Genre: Animated Superhero Comedy
As far as lighter fare is concerned, one of the most anticipated animated movies of 2017 is The Lego Batman Movie, which is slated to hit theaters in February.
The film is being directed by Chris McKay, the man behind The Lego Movie and Robot Chicken. The film will star Ralph Fiennes as Alfred, Michael Cera as Robin, Rosario Dawson as Batgirl, and Zach Galifianakis as The Joker. Let me write that again: Zach Galifianakis as The Joker. Count us in.
The movie will focus on Bruce Wayne dealing with the criminals of Gotham City while raising the boy he adopted. It looks like an absolutely hilarious take on the Dark Knight, and we can’t wait to see a lighter Batman movie.
9. Wonder Woman
Release Date: June 2, 2017
Starring: Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright
Genre: Superhero Action
Say what you will about Batman v. Superman, but if nothing else, it spawned a breakout performance for Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, with many people writing off her casting prior to the film’s release. Now, it’s clear that Gadot is meant to play the Amazonian princess.
The film’s story is set up when American pilot Steve Trevor crash lands on Diana’s island and tells her about a world war happening, enticing her to leave her home and attempt to stop the war.
Wonder Woman is being directed by Patty Jenkins, director of Monster and The Killing, and it will star Gadot, Chris Pine and Robin Wright.
Of course, the film has been in development for quite some time, with Warner Bros. first talking about the film in 1996. It was then rumored that Sandra Bullock would star, with other actresses including Angelina Jolie, Beyonce Knowles, Rachel Bilson, Megan Fox and just about everyone else under the sun in talks to possibly star. Joss Whedon was attached to write the film as recently as 2007 before departing the project due to script differences.
Now, 20 years after its original announcement, a proper big budget Wonder Woman movie is on the way. Following Gal Gadot’s debut in BvS, we wouldn’t be surprised if the upcoming feature film becomes a massive success. The movie will hopefully set the summer movie season off on the right path, and we can’t wait to see if that rings true when it releases in June 2017.

10. The Dark Tower
Release Date: February 17, 2017
Starring: Idris Elba, Katheryn Winnick, Matthew McConaughey
Steven King films have been fairly hit and miss, but that is hardly deterring out excitement for a feature-length adaptation of The Dark Tower. This is actually a series of books, with the first one being released way back in 1982. Since then, there have been eight different books set in this world and several comic book adaptations that feature some stellar artwork.
While some major facts, including the plot, still remain a mystery it will be interesting to see how much this movie draws from the eight books. There’s no doubt that this could easily be made into a franchise, but with such mature content, one has to wonder about such a film series’ sustainability.
11. Cars 3
Release Date: June 16, 2017
Starring: Owen Wilson
Genre: Animated Comedy
The Cars series lands somewhere in the middle of the pack in terms of quality Pixar movies. However, that doesn’t mean that this series cannot rise to greatness as Pixar rarely produces films of a low quality, even if they are sequels. The story for the film is still very much unknown, but from what little Cars 3 plot details have been released, we can gather our hero Lighting McQueen will need to compete in a series of races to prove himself. Which, is pretty much like the other two movies, but when your world is full of sentient cars there’s only so many avenues you can go down.
What we can expect from Cars 3 is more of that gorgeous animation and clever humor that the series is known for. Even though the 2013 spinoff movie Planes didn’t exactly take off (get it?), this is an opportunity to revitalize a franchise that has been dormant for a few years.

12. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Release Date: July 7, 2017
Starring: Tom Holland, Martin Starr, Marisa Tomei
Genre: Superhero Action
Okay, talk about controversial superhero films and we have no doubt Spider-Man will make his appearance eventually. This is the third time that this hero’s franchise has been rebooted and now under the wing of Marvel all eyes are on director John Watts to deliver. Even though Spider-Man made his appearance during Captain America: Civil War, he really only showed up for a few scenes, leaving fans wanting more Spidey.
Though from what we saw actor Tom Holland certainly has the personality of Peter Parker down and the costume may be the best to ever appear on-screen. Even though there’s been some serious controversy surrounding actress Zendaya’s role (which, for the record, we don’t care what ethnicity Mary Jane is) we haven’t jumped off the hype train yet. Now, all we can hope for is a decent Spider-Man movie that doesn’t feel like one long market advertisement.
13. John Wick: Chapter Two / John Wick 2
Release Date: February 10, 2017
Starring: Keanu Reeves, Ruby Rose, Ian McShane
John Wick is one of the best action films ever made. There, I said it. For those, and I am sure there are many, who missed this movie back when it released in 2014, John Wick is about an assassin is out for revenge. Said hitman is absurdly talented and leaves a wake of bodies behind him that is only rivaled by RoboCop and Rambo.
Now with a sequel on the way and much of the former cast returning to reprise their roles, our excitement is at a peak. We have been stagnant for solid action movies over the summer and even most of 2016, so it’s great to know that such quality is just over the horizon. Also, it’s clear that Reeves is taking his return seriously as the practice video of him training is almost as insane as the movie itself.

More From Nerd Much?:
14. Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Release Date: November 3, 2017
Starring: Channing Tatum, Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Halle Berry
Genre: Action Spy
Speaking of action movie sequels that we are excited for, Kingsman: The Golden Circle certainly deserves a spot on our list. The original Kingsman was a fantastic homage to the spy genre and the James Bond franchise. This new film sees the return of almost the entire core cast along with newcomers Halle Berry and Channing Tatum.
The story revolves around an attack at the Kingsman’s headquarters, leaving Eggsy and Merlin tasked with discovering what new villain has done this to them. While the villain hasn’t been announced yet, we believe that Tatum will be playing this role as he is one of the few big stars whose yet to announce their role. We also know that Colin Firth will be returning as well to reprise his role, but to what extent is still a mystery to us.
If this film is anything like the last one, expect a wild and fun ride that oozes personality.
15. Blade Runner 2049
Release Date: October 5, 2017
Starring: Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto
Okay, we are not exactly sure what to expect from the long-awaited Blade Runner sequel that will follow up one of the best sci-fi movies ever made. On the one hand, this is giving us a chance to explore the world and see what it looks like when not constrained to early 1980’s special effects. Plus, we have Harrison Ford reprising his role and a talented director behind the wheel.
This will probably be the most scrutinized of all the movies in 2017, due to the legendary stature that the original Blade Runner has obtained. Blade Runner is taught in many a film classes as one of the best movies ever made, so there is no doubt that this movie has a lot to live up too. However, the possibility of getting another legendary entry in this series only makes us more excited. Even if it doesn’t live up to the original, it will be a treat to revisit this world once again.
[irp posts=”37228″ name=”Blade Runner Sequel Casts Jared Leto”]
Release Date: March 3, 2017
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Elizabeth Rodriguez
Genre: Superhero Action
X-Men has had a mixed showing in 2016, as Deadpool delivered everything fans could hope for, while Apocolypse was a bit of a mess. This could also describe both of the previous Wolverine movies as one is considered the worst in the franchise, while the other was a fun, solid entry that is still enjoyed today.
With this being the last time we could possibly see Jackson in the role of Wolverine, there is no doubt that we will be going out with a bang. Plus, this will actually be rated R, making for possibly the bloodiest superhero movie to ever be released. Out of all the superhero movies on this list, this is by far my most anticipated. Now all we have to do is wait several months for it to be released — great.
17. Friday the 13th
Release Date: January 13, 2017
Okay, slasher film remakes haven’t been having the best luck, especially when it comes to reinventing some of horror’s most iconic characters. This isn’t the first time that Friday the 13th has been remade, as it had a revitalization back in 2009 with very mixed success. We don’t have a director, actors, or even a basic plot for this remake so much of this film remains a mystery. However, you can be certain that if this movie flops we will not see Jason for a very long time, as this may be his last chance to make a big splash in the horror genre.
[irp posts=”31117″ name=”A Crash Course in Horror: Friday the 13th Review”]
Release Date: July 28, 2017
Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Tom Holland
Genre: Adventure, Family, Fantasy
Add this to the list of classic family movies that we didn’t expect to get a remake any time soon. Not like we are complaining, the world of Jumanji is rich for exploration and it helps that there is a fantastic cast in this film. Directed by Jake Kasdan this film is considered a reimagining of the original 1995 film, but the actual plot is not known yet. Hopefully, the CGI for the animals will look great, because that could easily make or break the movie.
19. Justice League
Release Date: November 17, 2017
Starring: Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ben Affleck, Jared Leto
Genre: Superhero Action
Okay, DC hasn’t had the best luck when it comes to the recent cinematic endeavors and with both Wonder Woman and Justice League releasing in the same year the pressure is on. Unlike many of the films on this list, we actually know a lot about this movie and what the plot is going to be.
Set some time after the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Bruce Wayne is scouring the planet in search of other meta-humans. The villain this time around is Steppenwolf, but we fully expect Darkseid to make an appearance in the post-credit sequence. The superheroes showing up this time around are Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg, Batman, and Wonder Woman, with the possibility of Superman.
This film will be directed once again by Zach Snyder and feature much of the same cast from the previous DC movies. The only trailer for Justice League debuted at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and showed off what every hero is going to look like in their full outfits, with the exception of Aquaman who just acted like an angry drunk.
Much like the rest of DC’s films, this one has been surrounded in controversy, as the new trailer is clearly aiming for a light-hearted approach. While this can be akin to Marvel, it’s clear the dark and gritty concept has not been working well for DC. Hopefully, the fans and critics can actually agree on a DC films outcome for once as we’d love nothing more than to see this legendary team dominate the big screen.
20. War of the Planet of the Apes
Release Date: July 14, 2017
Starring: Judy Greer, Woody Harrelson, Andy Serkis
Genre: Sci-Fi Action
The Planet of the Apes movies is a shining example of how studios can reimagine a franchise and make it far better than the originals. Yes, I understand that the original films are classic, but both Rise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes developed their characters in interesting and new ways. They’ve built upon a foundation and understood that you don’t need to rush into the whole “apes rule the world” concept.
The third and possibly final movie in the series, this film is set after the dramatic events of Rise. The plot is completely unknown, but we have our own theory for what it could be about. Since the last film ended with the apes losing all trust in humankind, this will certainly be about the last remaining humans trying to survive an onslaught of apes.
We do know that Woody Harrelson and Judy Greer will be playing the part of humans, while Andy Serkis reprises his role as the ape leader Ceaser. There’s also speculation that the evil ape Koba will return since you can hear his screams in the after credit scene of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
21. Robin Hood: Origins
Release Date: TBA 2017
Starring: Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, Eve Hewson
“Gritty” is a term that gets thrown around a lot when it comes to modern reimaginings of popular film franchises, but Robin Hood feels like a natural fit. Even though his world is usually associated with beign quite colorful and full of personality, a darker version could fit the film better. However, the stigma of “dark/gritty” movies is one it will have to shake and hopefully is can develop some great action set piece moments.
22. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Release Date: May 26, 2017
Starring: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Kaya Scoderlario
Genre: Action Adventure
Okay, let’s be real, the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie was a hot mess and almost sent this franchise to the bottom of the ocean. However, it looks like this new film may have more potential, thanks to the return of characters like Will Turner (Orlando Bloom). This is important because in the last movie Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) lacked any sense of balance, which is what someone like Turner can do.
There’s no doubt at all that this movie has the potential to capture the magic from the original three movies. The Pirates of the Caribbean world is rich for exploring and the lore is actually quite interesting. However, it’s important that this movie avoids all the problems of the last, namely just making it about watching Sparrow go from one zany scenario to another.
All we know so far about the plot is that Jack Sparrow is scouring the ocean in search of Poseidon’s Trident, which seems like the most powerful object in this world’s lore.
23. Uncharted Movie
Release Date: June 30, 2017
Genre: Action Adventure, Based on Video Game
No, this movie will not just be a carbon copy of Indiana Jones, despite the gaming franchise taking heavily from this film series for inspiration. Video game movies have not had great luck and with Ubisoft doubling down on their properties it may be up to Sony to save this genre.
Uncharted will undoubtedly be about Drake searching for some lost supernatural artifact while being pursued by a colorful cast of villains. We can’t imagine that the movie will stray far from the actual games and could even just follow the plot of the original titles. Uncharted is lucky because of how linear the story is, making an adaptation of the franchise a far easier task than say The Division or World of Warcraft.
All we know is that Joe Carnahan will be writing the script, as no director or even actors have been announced yet. Though given Carnahan’s previous works (including episodes of The Blacklist and 2010’s The A-Team), it will be full of the personality that this franchise desperately thrives upon.
[irp posts=”13429″ name=”How the Uncharted 4 Ending Should’ve Happened”]
24. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
Release Date: March 24, 2017
Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Annabelle Wallis, Aidan Gillen
Genre: Action Adventure Fantasy
Many of you may not have even know that there was going to be another movie based around the tale of King Arthur, but trust us — this one looks amazing. Not only does this film boast a roster of amazing talent such as Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law, Annabelle Wallis, and Eric Bana, but is directed by Guy Ritchie.
Following the legend that Arthur pulled a legendary sword from a massive rock, this is a movie that has a real sense of excitement. In the trailer alone it’s clear that this movie wants to have fun and is very much about the spectacle of the tale. Featuring massive elephants, a plethora of mythological beasts, and some great looking battle sequences; King Arthur is set to be one of the best fantasy movies of 2017.
25. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter / Resident Evil 6
Release Date: January 27, 2017
Starring: Milla Jovovich, Ruby Rose, Ali Larter
Genre: Sci-fi Action Horror
At this point, we feel it’s pretty much required to go see the last Resident Evil movie, since it may be the final time we see this famed horror franchise make it on the big screen. There is no arguing the quality of the last few Resident Evil movies has been poor at best, but this new one is at least returning to Racoon City.
The Resident Evil film franchise has not received a lot of love lately, especially with the last outing being a completely pandering mess. However, this time around it seems like not only Wesker will be involved but the Tyrant as well (who was killed in the third movie, but I’m willing to forget Extinction ever happened if you are). Of all the movies on our list, Resident Evil 6 has the most to prove as it could send the series off on a high note or solidify everyone’s feelings on this gaming film franchise.
26. Get Out
Release Date: February 24, 2017
Starring: Allison Williams, Lakeith Stanfield, Catherine Keener
Director: Jordan Peele
One of the best-looking horror movies of the year comes from the mind of funnyman Jordan Peele, but Get Out doesn’t appear to be any sort of laughing matter at all. In fact, it looks pretty terrifying. The film will follow a young black man who visits his white girlfriend’s family estate, where he learns that many of the black residents have gone missing. Another black man on the estate warns him to “get out”.
The film, which is being produced by masters of horror Blumhouse Productions, will obviously have a strong emphasis on how someone’s own identity could play into the horror they’re facing.
27. Patient Zero
Release Date: TBA 2017
Starring: Natalie Dormer, Matt Smith
Director: Stefan Ruzowitzky
I’m actually starting to wonder if Patient Zero, the Natalie Dormer/Matt Smith-starring zombie movie, will even make it into 2017, as we haven’t heard much about it. The film will follow a viral super-strain that takes over humanity, turning those infected into adrenaline-fueled but intelligent creatures — or, you know, fast zombies. The last survivors will hunt for Patient Zero to find a cure.
With the rise of modern zombie movies taking a more emotional route, we’re hoping that Patient Zero does a little something to tug at the heartstrings. And even if it doesn’t, well, we’re still getting a zombie movie starring Matt Smith.
28. Beauty and the Beast
Release Date: March 17, 2017
Starring: Emma Watson, Ewan McGregor, Luke Evans, Dan Stevens
Director: Bill Condon
I’m always a little weirded out when anything in movies that isn’t human talks, but the tale is such a classic that I’m willing to look past just how weird Beast actually looks. Plus, it feels as though Emma Watson was born to play the role of Belle, and we’re most excited to see how she actually does in the role. Live-action remakes of classic animated films are always a tough pill to swallow at first — mostly because we don’t want our childhood favorites to be ruined. But out of all of the remakes we’ve been given so far, Beauty and the Beast is the most exciting.
Not only does the cinematography seen in the trailers look impressive, but the cast is absolutely incredible. It includes such big names as Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Ewan McGregor, Josh Gad, Ian McKellen, Emma Thompson, Stanley Tucci, Kevin Kline, and more recognizable faces than you can shake a stick at.
29. The Discovery
Release Date: March 31, 2017
Starring: Rooney Mara, Robert Redford, Jason Segel
Director: Charlie McDowell
Netflix’s first really big movie release is The Discovery, a sci-fi romance film that made waves at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. It follows recent events after the existence of an afterlife has been scientifically proven. The discovery leads to an influx of suicides around the world, and during the trying times, a man (Jason Segel) falls in love with a woman (Rooney Mara) who has a tragic past.
We’re hoping that the film’s great premise is enough to carry the film, as it could easily turn into a run-of-the-mill love story with just a touch of sci-fi; I’d much rather see the sci-fi side of things explored here.
Release Date: July 21, 2017
Starring: Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance
Director: Christopher Nolan
The brilliant mind of director Christopher Nolan brings us Dunkirk, the story of Allied Soldiers who are surrounded by the German army on the beaches of Dunkirk during a battle in World War II. The film will contain an original score by composer Hans Zimmer, and the film’s first trailer both looks and sounds great. Plus, the cast includes the incredible Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy, both of which worked with Nolan on Inception and The Dark Knight Rises — both of which were also great films. Here’s to hoping Dunkirk lives up to the hype that’s behind it.
