According to a person familiar with the situation (via TheWrap), a Man of Steel sequel has been put into active production, with Henry Cavill in tow. No word on who the director will be this time around.
The original 2013 film was directed by Zack Snyder and brought in $668 million globally. Superman’s next appearance in this year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hit even higher numbers with the help of Batman, hitting $872 million in its theater run.
The report notes that Superman is now a ‘top priority’ for DC, and the studio wants to prove that they can get the character right.
Despite often being critically dropkicked by critics and fans on social media, DC’s movie universe continues to bring in the cash, as this weekend’s release of Suicide Squad (which holds a Metascore of 40 out of 100) brought in $135 million, breaking the August record.
Of course, it’s likely that a Man of Steel 2 wouldn’t be released until after the Batman movie in 2018 or even 2019, as Warner Bros. has previously announced that there are two untitled DC films on the calendar for October 5, 2018 and November 1, 2019. Now that we have a bit more information, it’s likely that one of these untitled films is, in fact, the Man of Steel sequel.
