When the most recent trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was released, the internet exploded in speculation about what his part in the story might be. And why wouldn’t it? Doomsday comes from one of the most important Superman stories in comic book history.
Death of Superman was a big turning point in the industry. It was unheard of at the time to kill off a major superhero. His death and later return unleashed new possibilities in storytelling. No longer were superheroes permanent or completely invincible. They could come and go, or even pass down the mantle so to speak.
Today, via French magazine Premiere, production designer Patrick Tatopoulos shed some new light on this major villian in the DC universe. It should be noted that spoilers may follow.
Tatopoulos explained that even though fans already know the Death of Superman story, it has been handled differently in this movie. “When the film is called Batman v Superman, it really has a lot of levels to the meaning,” he says. “Superman isn’t just killed off at the end of something. We see how he evolves as part of Lex’s plan to protect the world.”
Even more interesting is towards the end of his interview. According to Tatopoulos, Doomsday may not be the biggest villain. “Doomsday isn’t just the final act. Those feeling they may know too much this early, are going to be in for a true surprise.”
