With only a few movies under her belt, Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o is in negotiations to star in Intelligent Life. The upcoming sci-fi thriller comes from Ambil Entertainment and is eyeing Ava DuVernay as director.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Colin Trevorrow is joining up again with Derek Connolly to write the script. The pair previously worked together on the highly successful Jurassic World.
While Lupita Nyong’o is still in negotiations, Ava DuVernay is expected to receive the offer to direct within the next day or so. DuVernay has grown famous for her work behind Selma, the Martin Luther King biopic. She is also in talks with Disney to adapt the children’s book classic A Wrinkle in Time.
Lupita Nyong’o won an Oscar for her performance in 12 Years a Slave. This movie also marks as her debut on the big screen. More recently, she appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the alien Maz Kanata. Additionally, she will appear in Disney’s star studded adaptation of The Jungle Book.
Intelligent Life is about a U.N. Worker in a department that was created to represent humankind in case we receive alien contact. The worker ends up falling in love with a woman who happens to be one of these aliens. Lupita Nyong’o is expected to play this woman.
The movie is a re-imagining of the earlier Tevorrow-Connolly project called The Ambassador. This movie will bring the story to a larger scale and is said to be similar in tone to Trevorrow’s Safety Not Guaranteed.
With Intelligent Life scheduled to begin shooting this summer, expect more news in the coming months.
