In an exclusive with Variety actor/director Ben Affleck revealed that he will not be directing the upcoming solo Batman filmed, which is currently only known as The Batman. He will not be leaving the project entirely, as Affleck still plans on playing the title character and is staying on as a producer for this film. Yesterday, Ben Affleck released the following statement regarding his decision:
“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
While his choice to step down is surprising at first, one has to remember that Ben Affleck just suffered a rather noticeable flop with his last movie Live by Night. That being said, it will be interesting to see who Warner Bros. tap for their next director given that Zach Snyder will be working on Justice League during this time. There’s no shortage of talented filmmakers in Hollywood, however, it will be critical that this film succeeds as the DC Cinematic Universe has been limping along since Man of Steel released back in 2013.
Regardless, we are both saddened and intrigued by the prospect of a new director for the Dark Knight’s latest film.
