If you somehow grew up without ever seeing any of these classic characters, Speedy Gonzales is the cartoon mouse that can easily outrun the fastest of cats. Everyone who knows him recognizes his iconic cry of “Arriba! Arriba! Andale! Andale!”
According to Deadline, this 1960’s staple is being eyed for a full-length animated feature. Mexico’s beloved filmmaker and actor Eugenio Derbez is expected to voice the mouse.
“In Mexico we grew up watching Speedy Gonzales,” says Derbez. ” He was like a superhero to us, or maybe more like a revolutionario like Simon Bolivar or Pacho Villa. He watched out for the little people but with a lot of bravado and a weakness for the ladies. I’m really excited to be bringing this character to the big screen. And besides being Mexican— my full name is Eugenio Derbez Gonzalez and I have big ears. The casting couldn’t be better.”
The proposed name of the project is called Speedy and it’s being described as a heist caper. Producer Dylan Sellers says, “We see this as an origin story of the great master, like a Robin Hood character, who ultimately ends up taking from the rich and giving to the poor.”
We certainly love the idea of a Speedy Gonzales movie. What do you think? Now seems like as good a time as ever.
