We’ve known for a while now that AMC has larger plans for their Walking Dead slate than what’s already on the network. It was announced in November that Andrew Lincoln would headline a series of movies. And prior to that, the network’s CEO confirmed they had plans for “the next decade, plus.” Today, new light has been shed on those plans, with confirmation that a new Walking Dead spinoff is officially in the works.

The news came our way via a quarterly earnings call that AMC’s COO Ed Carroll took charge on. It’s here that Carroll confirmed what CEO Josh Sapan alluded to back in September, but gave a bit more specifics. The COO stated that a third television series was in “active development”, but other than that, he wouldn’t shed any details.

Carroll confirmed the network wasn’t “at a stage where we’ll be announcing its plans to premiere.” But he did confirm wheels were in motion by stating “we have hired creative people that have pitched story outlines. We feel very good about the development of that series.”

When questioned as to the possible success of a new Walking Dead spinoff when the original is in decline, Carroll responded unabashed. He retorted “We are well aware that when a show has been around for nine years, you would expect viewership to be declining, but I think we’ve managed that and managed that well.” And he continued on by confirming that AMC may be in better shape without the original series “because generally expenses go up as the seasons continue and viewership declines. That’s just a general pattern with any show that’s been around as long as The Walking Dead has.”

Again, Carroll wouldn’t inform those on the call as to when fans can expect this new Walking Dead spinoff to join the ranks of the original series and Fear the Walking Dead on AMC’s yearly slate. But with “creative people” actively pitching stories for the new show, we may see the next batch of the undead on television sometime next year.
