LIFE has been an odd film, as the previous trailer that was released 3 months ago really didn’t offer much beyond the very basics of the story. Thankfully, this has been fixed as the newest trailer for this science fiction/horror film not only lends a deeper understanding to the plot but the characters as well. Directed by Daniel Espinosa, who’s best known for Safe House and Child 44, this film follows the story of a group astronauts that discover the first signs of life on Mars via a research pod. That biological organism turns out to be hostile and attacks the crew, forcing them to kill it before it can escape and reach Earth.
While it’s nice that the LIFE trailer showcases many of the characters personalities and quirks, one has to wonder if it may have shown a bit too much. Given science fiction films like this that rely on suspense and horror usually need to keep audiences in the dark, many of the big moments appeared within this new trailer. Now, there could always be more than what we just saw, but the base footage pretty much laid out all three acts of the movie.
It’s clear that the film is channeling other sci-fi films like Alien, as a majority of the action seems to have a claustrophobic feeling to it. While this creature doesn’t seem as imposing as a xenomorph, the cinematography itself was clearly inspired by Ridley Scotts’ masterpiece. That being said, it will be interesting to see which big name actors like Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson, and Jake Gyllenhaal survive their alien encounter. LIFE is set to release in the United States on March 24, 2017.
