Bethesda: Sony Blocking Skyrim, Fallout 4 Mods on PS4

Fallout 4 PS4 modsWell, this is certainly a surprising turn of events.

Bethesda has released an update on their website this morning containing some surprising information regarding their relationship with Sony, at least in terms of the console mods scene. In a detailed post, Bethesda noted that Sony won’t allow mods to be enabled on the PS4 “the way they should work”, which is why we’ve yet to see Fallout 4 mods on the console and why we won’t see them in the upcoming Skyrim remaster. More specifically, Bethesda says Sony is denying user mods that would allow gamers to do anything they want in Fallout 4 or Skyrim.

The statement reads:

After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition.

Like you, we are disappointed by Sony’s decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive. We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience. However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available.

We will provide an update if and when this situation changes.

To put this into perspective, Fallout 4 mods have already hit the Xbox Onewhich will also likely see support for Skyrim mods when the remaster launches in October.

Given the fact that console mods have been promised for Fallout 4 on both the Xbox One and PS4 since its launch, it’s certainly going to create a stir among PS4 gamers who have been waiting for those mods to hit their consoles. To what extent this announcement will upset the PlayStation fanbase is unclear, but any way you spin it, it’s not a great PR move for PlayStation.
