If you’ve been knee-deep in egg nog and yuletide cheer like the rest of us here at Nerd Much?, chances are you were starting to wonder whether or not we’d actually see a new Overwatch Winter Wonderland event in 2017. After all — it is already December 7th and we hadn’t heard anything. Until now.
Blizzard took to YouTube this morning to announce this year’s holiday event for Overwatch, and it sounds like a doozy. Game director Jeff Kaplan detailed the event, which we now know is set to debut on December 12th for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. This year’s festitivies brings “a lot” (you heard the man!) of new legendary skins, including a brand new Hanzo skin (about damn time!), Junkrat, and Roadhog. Unfortunately, Kaplan wanted to keep the rest of the skins close to home so that we can all be surprised when we login next Tuesday.
Luckily, there’s more Overwatch holiday goodness for you to chew on right now. The Overwatch team has given some maps a holiday redux, with not only Kings Row and Hanamura’s holiday themed maps returning but also the Black Forest arena map. Mei’s Global Snowball offensive will make its return, and it will also be available in the new Black Forest arena.
On top of these cosmetic changes, there will be a brand new holiday mode centered around Mei as well. Basically, you’ll team up with five other Meis and attempt to take down a yeti (Winston), controlled by another player (not AI). The mode takes place in Nepal village, and it’ll first task players with finding their yeti and then with taking it down.
Winston, on the other hand, will spend his time wandering around the map to get power-ups that have been scattered around to fuel his primal rage. Once the yeti is Primal Raged, the tables turn and the Meis just have to do whatever they can to escape.
