You could say that Platinum Games have gotten around. They’ve had titles published by Sega, Nintendo, Konami, Activision, and Square Enix. Platinum was even developing Scalebound for Microsoft Studios before that project’s eventual demise.

The developer has taken on high profile properties such as Transformers, The Legend of Korra and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But now, they want complete control for whatever the company strives to do next.

And apparently, that’s one of two things – or maybe both. Atsushi Inaba, a producer and head of development at Platinum Games, recently spoke with Game Informer regarding the studio’s future. A future that Platinum Games wants full control over:

“Up until now, obviously we’ve worked on original IPs for a wide variety of publishers. We’ve also worked on other Hollywood IPs for other publishers as well. But we’re becoming more and more interested in the idea of self-publishing and doing our own title.”

The problem lies in the funding though. While successful, Platinum Games isn’t stable enough to take on the burden of a massively expensive AAA title as of yet. So, Inaba stated that the company will have to strive for something smaller and more manageable to begin their self published journey:

“We can’t put together a AAA, $10 million-plus game, because we just don’t have that sort of cash as an independent developer. However, we don’t plan to go the indies route with just a few people on a team making a game, so it’ll be somewhere in the middle.”

Inaba stated that Platinum has “two designs that we’re genuinely focused on.” He also said that they’ll probably green light one of those two ideas and begin development with a team of around 20 people.

Bayonetta 3 is the only high profile game remaining on Platinum Games’ docket that we’re aware of. The developer – and soon to be self publisher – should have the freedom to begin making their own projects quite soon. It’ll be very interesting to see what they have in store for us.
