Netflix dropped a pretty big bombshell this afternoon that should prove to bring a ton of new animated content our way. The studio confirmed that they’ve come to an agreement with The Roald Dahl Story Company to bring numerous Roald Dahl book adaptations to their streaming platform.
Netflix is calling themselves the “brand new home” to many of Dahl’s characters and stories. In total, Netflix confirmed 16 titles of Dahl’s that will be animated for their subscribers. The studio is labeling the Roald Dahl book adaptations as “an exclusive new slate of original animated event series.” But it’s unclear whether the 16 titles will get series of their own, single episodes under a Roald Dahl book adaptations season, or a series of animated features. But from what we can gather it’s likely 16 individual series.
Netflix provided a list of the full catalogue of agreed upon titles. The upcoming Roald Dahl book adaptations will include the following:
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
- The BFG
- The Twits
- Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator
- George’s Marvellous Medicine
- Boy – Tales of Childhood
- Going Solo
- The Enormous Crocodile
- The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me
- Henry Sugar
- Billy and the Minpins
- The Magic Finger
- Esio Trot
- Dirty Beasts
- Rhyme Stew
Here’s Netflix’s statement confirming their commitment to bringing the upmost quality to their newly announced Roald Dahl book adaptations:
“Roald Dahl stories have long inspired award-winning feature films and stage productions. But now, for the first time, Netflix will bring together the highest quality creative, visual, and writing teams to extend the stories in this first-of-its-kind slate of premium animated event series and specials for audiences of all ages and for families to enjoy together. Netflix intends to remain faithful to the quintessential spirit and tone of Dahl while also building out an imaginative story universe that expands far beyond the pages of the books themselves.”
Netflix didn’t confirm when they hope to begin premiering these Roald Dahl book adaptations. But they did confirm that production on the first Netflix Dahl animated series will begin next year.
