The Batman is probably the most intriguing property on Warner Bros. and DC’s film slate. With Ben Affleck’s departure from the role and Matt Reeves picking up the reigns as the writer and director, no one really knows what to expect from the project. It’s still beginning to take form nonetheless though, as our newest Batman has been cast. Robert Pattinson is our new Caped Crusader.
Variety dropped the news yesterday evening of the Robert Pattinson The Batman casting. Matt Reeve’s list of potential players was narrowed down to he and Nicholas Hoult – portrayer of Beast in the recent X-Men movies. But Pattinson was said to always be the studio and Reeves’ top choice.
Robert Pattinson is of course best known for his role as Edward Cullen in the four Twilight films. It’s there that he likely learned his ability to brood so well… – I jest. Pattinson started his movie career as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. But he’s gone on to prominent roles outside of the young adult genre with roles within Remember Me, Water for Elephants and plenty more.
The actor has a loose tie to Batman already as he was recently cast in Christopher Nolan’s (director of Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises) next project. Alongside Elizabeth Debicki and John David Washington, Nolan’s next film is very guarded. Though Pattinson commented that the script was “unreal”.
We don’t have many details on what Matt Reeves is planning with The Batman. He previously described the project as a “noir Batman tale.” Reeves teased that “It’s told very squarely on his shoulders, and I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional. It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”
Hopefully Warner Bros., DC and Reeves have a vision that makes the Robert Pattinson The Batman combo a legit one. We’ll see how it transitions to the big screen ourselves when The Batman flies into theaters in late 2021.
